Renfe operates five to seven direct AVE services daily between Seville Santa Justa and Barcelona Sants. Scheduled journey time is 5h 25m to 5h 45m depending on the train. Vueling and Iberia run six to eight flights a day with a scheduled time in the air of 1h 45m.
The door-to-door picture changes the arithmetic. Seville Santa Justa sits inside the city; Barcelona Sants is a short metro ride from the centre. Airports sit outside both cities and add security, baggage, and transfers that push the flight option past four hours total even on a perfect day.
The AVE is a straightforward high-speed ride with power, Wi-Fi and a café car. You board in the morning and arrive before dinner with luggage handled once and no security queues. The ride crosses Andalusia then the high plains of La Mancha before dropping into Catalonia.
Spain invested heavily in the AVE network through the 2000s and 2010s. The Seville–Madrid–Barcelona axis has been complete for years and now carries reliable hourly service in peak periods. No sleeper option exists on this corridor; the old night trains were withdrawn long ago.
The plane still wins on a same-day return or when you need to connect onward from Barcelona Airport. Otherwise the train removes the friction that makes short flights tiring.

Advance AVE fares open at €35 in tourist class and rise toward €85 closer to departure. Walk-up tickets cost €110-plus. Renfe's own site is simplest; through-ticketing is not required since the service is direct.
Santa Justa to Sants, both central.
Seville Santa Justa is a short taxi or tram ride from the old town. Barcelona Sants connects directly to metro lines 3 and 5 and sits ten minutes from Plaça Catalunya. No platform changes on direct AVE services.
Summer heat and occasional track works.
The route is stable outside July and August when heat-related speed restrictions can add twenty minutes. Build a small buffer if connecting onward from Barcelona Sants; winter disruption is rare.

"Median arrival delay at Barcelona Sants is under ten minutes. The 90th percentile reaches thirty minutes, almost always from engineering works between Madrid and Zaragoza rather than the Seville section."
Low. The corridor is one of Renfe's most reliable long-distance routes with few single-track bottlenecks.
None on direct AVE services. All trains run through without change.
"The first two hours cross olive country and rolling hills. The middle section is high plateau, flat and featureless. The final hour descends through vineyards into the Catalan coastal plain. Not dramatic, but steady and comfortable."
Renfe operates every train on this route. Tickets are sold directly by Renfe; compensation follows Spanish rail rules and is straightforward to claim via their app.
